Sue Gascoyne

Sue Gascoyne is a socially-engaged artist whose current practice uses textiles, stitch, ceramics, painting, mark-making, sculpture, glass, bio materials and mixed media to explore identity, agency, safety and connections to the environment and each other.

Sue’s sensory-rich art explores what it means to be human. The hand of the maker is evident in the plethora of practices used to bring sculpture to life and sustainability is key. With work shown in 26 exhibitions since 2024, Sue's work has been widely exhibited throughout London and East Anglia.

Sue is passionate about making art accessible and relevant through hands-on workshops, co-creation activities and creating safe spaces for reflection and connection.

I love a challenge & stitching on a sail has definitely been the hardest thing I’ve made!!!! Thought I’d share these 2 pics of stitched tomato bag netting - a recurring material in my work. I’m thrilled to be a speaker delivering a session on how to use waste fruit & veg netting as part of @artbynatalya 3 day Salvage Art Summit in September, (24, 25, 26th). Sounds fab!

It’s been an absolute pleasure installing 2 exhibitions @museumoftheenvironment & working alongside super talented @artlici4_xoxo

The Museum of the Environment is such a cool building, bursting with character just right for creating 2 post apocalyptic ‘shops’. Meat features hand dyed, stitched & embellished textiles alongside gnarly ceramic pieces. Site specific & with some additions and changes to what was exhibited @officialharwichfestival & the old Debenhams in Head Street, expect to spot some suprises. Next to the butchers shop is a dystopian fishmongers. Gutted features all new work, being launched at Mote for the first time. From textiles to ceramics, biomaterials to natural materials & waste packaging, Gutted is a feast for the eyes.

Both installations invite us to think about the food we eat, its impacts on the environment & the intentionality of what we buy. With animal welfare, environmental care & our health inextricably linked, these installations are playful, a little gruesome & have a serious message.

Gutted & Meat are on show until February 2027 alongside some seriously talented artists. There’s also an exciting extravaganza on 22nd August from 6.45 which you don’t want to miss. Tickets in my bio.

What a beautiful way to kick off Holiday Fun @firstsitecolchester So much creativity & lovely to see children and adults on the floor making art. Check out Firstsite soon to see this beautiful banner installed for the Firstsite games. So many gorgeous flags have gone home with their makers. Great to be working with waste material - the flags have been made from a ripped sail which woukd otherwise go to landfill.

Join me on Saturday for a fun free session making Firstsite Flags! Marking the first of this summer’s Holiday Fun activities, we’ll be using recycled materials to create flags and bunting to festoon Firstsite with! Drop-in any time between 10 and 2.30.

We’ll be using a cut up old sail, and decorating flags and bunting with POSCA pens, woven wool, ribbon and recycled materials. Create your own flag or contribute to a collaborative flag to decorate the Firstsite games with. Can’t wait to see Firstsite festooned in colourful flags with your designs! All ages welcome. With lots of school trips to Braintree library taking place over the last few weeks to inspire thinking about the environment and our impacts, I’m so pleased that Accumulations has been part of the conversation. Tomorrow is the last day of the exhibition then Accumulations will be looking for a new home to continue to make a difference. I’m marking the occasion with a free textile workshop in the library between 1 & 3pm tomorrow. All ages & abilities welcome. Children to be accompanied by an adult. Been fishing out some of my clothes upcycling projects to share. It’s reminded me of what I love about upcycling. The challenge and excitement of solving a problem be it disguising a stain or tear, resolving a poor fit or tackling an outdated style. I love how small acts like these help us reduce our environmental footprint, minimising waste and the need to buy new clothes. It’s satisfying how a problem becomes an admired feature on a finished piece.

Upcycling doesn’t have to be about making big, bold irreversible changes. Sometimes the addition of a beautiful broach is enough to transform a piece. Like this bold yet delicate flower made from recycled fabrics, simply pop it on & you’re good to go!

After a sweltering set up, Accumulations is ready to welcome you to Braintree Library. Featuring a new sculpture focusing on AI & technological waste, & several quirky additions to what was shown in The Reading Room Gallery in Colchester, visitors are warmly invited to share their tips & ideas for minimising our waste. It’s all about the T-shirts!! Each & every t-shirt that I bought from @sthelenahospice was washed then carefully printed @colchmkrspc before being worn in Saturday’s powerful piece. I hope to see lots of these MEAT T-shirts popping up at events around Colchester & beyond. For the few that weren’t proudly taken home they’ve been given a new home @officialharwichfestival

So proud to be a part of Creative Colchester’s Culture for Everyone initiative, transforming empty spaces into vibrant art destinations. It took a wonderful partnership between @creativecolchester @colchesterinstitute @culversquare @colchester_art_society @theminories & Kholbros to transform the old Debenhams Windows & street scene of Colchester. This weekend the curtain closes on this exhibition as Colchester Institute students prepare for their takeover of the Old Debenhams Windows. To mark the occasion there will be a free Artist Walk & Talk between 3 & 4pm on Saturday 13th June, 2026. Visitors are invited to join some of the artists at their windows to talk about their work & answer any burning questions!

The event culminates in a gathering at Sue Gascoyne’s work - We’re ALL Meat in Head Street at 4.15 for some closing words, a performance and surprise artworks. Hope to see you there!

Portfolio of Exhibited Work

Coming to art late after a life-changing accident in 2023, I love exploring different media - whether repurposed textiles and stitch; stale coffee, ink and paper; natural stone pigments; biomaterials; or waste materials, from a dumped bike saddle, glass offcuts to fruit and vegetable net packaging! Welcome to my portfolio of projects and experimental art. Since my art practice began in October 2024 my work has been shown in 26 exhibitions in London and East Anglia.
